The recent hype on Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint offering to sell it's secret recipe for S$2 million caused an uproar with nearly neverending long queue outside their stall located in Upper Paya Lebar. And yes, I was one of those "kaisu" Singaporeans. Don't laugh!! Before the advertising on the newspaper, I went there once...
When we reached, there was already a queue formed all the way to the Bak Ku Teh stall -.-"'
And, the Lady Boss in action, chopping the Roast Ducks into smaller edible bites.
Finally, after queuing for more than an hour, we finally placed our orders. I know what many of you are thinking right now! Silly Singaporeans in action. But it's more of a personal achievement when I finally managed to eat them...
Whole Roast Duck (S$46)
What I like about their famous Roast Duck? They don't have a ducky smell unlike some places. Some of you may find the meat a little on the tough side but it's actually because it's leaner. Also, there isn't any thick layer of fats underneath the chargrilled skin and when paired up with the gravy it's delicious!
Char Siew (S$10) / Roast Pork (S$10)
How about their Char Siew? It's nicely grilled with a gently charred appearance. Meat tend to be oily but its the best meat plus oil combination of Char Siew making. For those who are afraid of the oily meat may pair it with the unique yellowish gravy that is slightly sour as it neutralises the oily texture. The way the Char Siew was cut into bigger and thicker slice helps in improving the texture when you chew. This is unlike the typical Char Siew outside where it's thin and you can hardly taste their seasoning and the charcoal "burnt" taste.
Roast Pork? Sadly, this pales in comparison with the first 2 dishes. Taste was fairly nice but could be better.
Overall, the duck was good but not good enough considering the price and the long waiting time. I love their Char Siew and felt that it's worth the S$2 million price tag but for the Roast Pork, nah... I had better ones. Because of the long waiting time, I don't think I will revisit again.
